2. Other hotels don’t allow you to change the name of the person on the reservation, but will allow you to add an additional guest, which should easily allow them to check in.
3. The last category of hotels don’t allow either of those things, so you have to call the hotel up and let them know that someone else will be checking in. I’ve searched through several reports of this and not once did I see anyone report that this was a problem – in all cases I read the hotel was completely fine with it.
