Position: Jr. Unix Administrator
Company: Primus Canada Location: Etobicoke
Department: I.S. Department Reports To: Director, IS Operations
Status: Full-time – 37.5 hours a week
Hours: Regular business hours
Accountability:
The Jr. Unix Administrator is responsible for assisting the Sr. Unix Administrator in maintaining the HP-UX Severs and related hardware and software applications. This position is also responsible for daily back up of HP-UX file systems and billing data and restoring the back up data, as required. In addition, the Jr. Unix Administrator monitors the HP-UX system resources (memory usage, free disk space, etc.) on a regular basis to ensure adequate HP-UX system disk space is available for the end users.
Responsibilities:
· · Assist in maintaining, installing, configuring and troubleshooting 7 HP-UX Servers and related hardware (controller, fibre channel, disk drives etc), software applications (Informix, X25, LAN software etc.) and the HP Mail System.· · Assist in troubleshooting server issues as directed by users. Escalate complex issues to the Sr. Unix Administrator and redirect database issues to the Database Administrator.· · Responsible for daily back up of all HP-UX file systems and billing data – ensuring scheduled back up runs smoothly.· · Ensure back-up tapes are sent to the designated off-site storage in a timely manner.· · Restore data from back-up tapes to the system, when required.· · Monitor system resources i.e. memory usage, free disk space etc.· · Ensure adequate HP-UX system disk space is available for the end users. Purge, archive data and/or upgrade hardware as per requirements.· · Update weekly report on HP-UX disk/memory usage. The report is the uploaded on the intranet.· · On call duties required - must be accessible after hours for server problems or outages.· · Work on various projects as required.
Qualifications:
· · 1-3 years of UNIX Administration experience.· · Secondary School Diploma required, Post Secondary College education (Certificate/Diploma) in IT, Computer Science or equivalent preferrable.· · Advanced knowledge of HP-UX servers.· · Working Knowledge of Linux, Solaris, Digital UX and Cache OS.· · Scripting knowledge (Shell and Perl)· · Billing application support knowledge.· · Sound knowledge of relational DB’s, preferably INFORMIX (ability to install and configure software, troubleshoot basic problems, do backup and restore)· · Knowledge of centralized back-up solutions and integration with Informix.· · Knowledge of TCP/IP Protocols, DNS on HP and CISCO Routers.· · Working knowledge Win 95/98/NT and DOS· · PC skills - MS Word, Excel, Access, Outlook.· · Strong interpersonal skills for effective interaction with clients and third parties.· · Good oral and written communication skills with the ability to respond to customer inquires via telephone as well as email in a professional and efficient manner.· · Must posses good problem solving and decision making skills.
