Nearly 30 per cent of Chinese women surveyed by the Shanghai Women's Federation see a wealthy husband as their meal ticket to a better life, state media reported in December.

While the Women's Federation was worried that such attitudes would reverse progress made towards women's liberation since the Communist takeover in 1949, many local girls still think of a rich husband as a short cut to an easy life, the Wenhui Daily reported.
"Finding a rich husband was the most important thing in my life. Men always think themselves superior to women and they like to provide comfortable living conditions for their children and spouses," Mrs Ou, a college graduate who quit her job after graduating to marry a rich foreigner, told AFP.
The full-time housewife damned "some professional women who are selfish and always consider what they get from their partners".
The questionnaire indicated that more and more young women are looking for shortcuts to high-quality lives through marriage with good men, the paper said.
Universities with large numbers of female students said socialising in order to find a rich mate has become more common and many educated young women see nothing humiliating about it, the paper said.
One college student survey said finding a good man would be "like a reincarnation," and said she did not want to depend on her own abilities to strive for a better life.
Another 23-year-old girl said she had taken a job as an air hostess in order to meet rich men, the paper said.
However, such attitudes do not reflect the views of the majority of women in the eastern city of Shanghai.
Many like Fudan University post-graduate Joy Wang, who works at an international accounting firm, say they want more from a relationship than piles of cash.
"I think higher education can widen people's view and women with higher education want more than money. They want mutual understanding between them and their husbands," Ms Wang said.
While she admitted that every girl would like a rich, handsome and gentle husband, Ms Wang said that she would prefer to rely on her own abilities because "prince charming is hard to find".

Only 21.12 per cent of Shanghai's advanced professionals are women and a mere 5.4 per cent of science and technology jobs are held by female staff, the report said.
