These will not resolve your WAN problem, but may improve your LAN performance.
1. Try to add your computer name/IP into the LMHOSTS which is for NetBios(WINS) name look-ups.
2. Try to use fixed IP, and use IP to connect to other machines on LAN.
3. Use a router instead of HUB for LAN and as a gateway to WAN. It only costs 40 something for a decent router now.
BTW, even in my office with all Windows 2000 machines, it is normal to see a machine freezes for 5 to 10 seconds while connecting to remote computers on LAN.
