Jabber's English Note---commitment

Marriage is a commitment. Indeed, it is a commitment if you are serious. That's why some people are so hesitating in getting married.

A commitment is different from a promise. If I promise to buy a toy for my kid, it is just a promise. But when my kid made his mind to learn violin, it is a commitment to music. He could not quit simply because he meets difficulties (for instance, he spent 4 months on practicing vibrato).

Sometime ago, my boss talked with me and asked me to play the architect role in our new project. I told him: "If I say yes, it is a commitment. So please give me some time to think about it. "

In most cases, the word commitment can translated into 承诺. But I am not a good translator. When I think, I always take a commitment as something serious.

    • Good job, jabber. If you commit to perfect spelling, your postings probably would have been much more appreciated.
      • Step by step, first this then that, things take time.
    • I am not kidding
One of my current managers is Chinese. She uses the word "probably" frequently and also confuses her co-workers a lot. For instance, she likes to say "Probably I should have a look at this subsystem", but she seldom does that. Now all of us know that if she says probably she is going to do sth, she never does it. The word "probably" have been abused by her and become meaningless in her vocabulary.
      • I know you are serious. Differences between synonymous / analogical words can be subtle or great.
