STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS:FUNCTIONS / JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for streaming media procedures using various computer languages and operating environments to support the content goals and applications of CBC websites.
DESCRIPTION / ACTIVITY:
Reviews and evaluates the existing streaming infrastructure, procedures and workflows used in maintaining the infrastructure, assets and system configurations. Work with a tech lead and business analyst to develop a new Media Production and Management tool for CBC.ca. Researches, reviews and recommends new technology, its relevance, compatibility and adaptability with existing systems. Assists in the evaluation of new tools. Liases with department staff to establish processing priorities and explains the capabilities and limitations of the available hardware and software. Optimizes the existing infrastructure to increase the number of audience. Assists in the maintenance of both the streaming infrastructure and other systems that are used for supporting and managing content. Works towards increasing the level of automation in maintenance and support by deploying or developing appropriate tools. Identifies and writes code that is essential to improving the maintenance and support. Ensures there is appropriate up to date documentation to support the infrastructure. Prepares and presents different parts of the infrastructure to various teams and individuals as necessary.
OBJECTIVE CRITERIA:
1. Experience in Real Media, Windows Media, Quicktime, Shoutcast streaming servers (Installation, configuration, maintenance).2. Encoding audio/video content in multiple formats, for on demand or live viewing online.3. Automating encoding processes.4. Technologies: OMT, Anystream, Real Producer, Sorenson, Media Cleaner5. Working knowledge of monitoring systems.6. Experience with installing/configuring Apache web server.7. Experience using AKAMAI Edge Suite products.8. Digital Media Assest Management (video/audio) experience.9. Digital Rights Management experience.10. RTSP, Multicast, IGMP.11. Experience architecting Media infrastructure and work flow.12. Programming on UNIX Platform in Python, Perl, C or Shell.13. Experience re-structuring an existing streaming media infrastructure.14. Membership with Media Organizations such as Siggraph, ACM etc. would be an asset.15. Bilingualism would be an asset.
SUBJECTIVE CRITERIA:
1. Excellent communication skills – verbal and written.2. Ability to clearly explain objectives, requirements and directions to others.3. Good interpersonal skills to ascertain appropriate measures when programming problems arise.4. Good organizational and time management skills.5. Ability to quickly learn new technologies and disseminate information to other CBC personnel, including non-technical people.6. Ability to exercise independent judgment.7. Ability to conceptualize, visualize, prototype and design applications.8. Strong analytical skills.
