Zhao is amazingly great at English speaking and writing. He flew to Toronto around 10:00 this morning, and started his concert without much rest around 1:30 PM. He had no English songs,

but he wrote two small English poems, which were beautiful, and read them while singing two Chinese songs.

Most of the songs were famous back to the Old Shanghai Era in 1920s. My mom would definitely be shocked, if she were around, by the fact that those old songs were tranformed so dramatically in tune with the western Jazz sensation that some of them actually had no Chinese temperament left. I myself feel kind of disappointed as well, and wonder what the purpose of Zhao's journey would be, since he failed to bring with him any true Chinese uniqueness .

On the other hand, he was enthusiastically welcomed by the dorminantly white audience.

  • 枫下佳缘 / 快乐单身 / The Annual Downtown Toronto Jazz Festival will start this Wednesday (June 20 - July 2) at the Nathan Philips Square. (Just in case you guys are too busy to remember it. ) :) Enjoy yourselves.
    • hi, sis, r u asking for companion or what?
      • Just give this information to you guys, and we will be there. :)
    • 好像价格不便宜啊!
      • They have free shows as well between 10 AM to 2 PM or so every day sponsored by TD bank and other corporates.
        • 请MM 谈谈这有啥好看的,有啥好听的?我准备带一帮小朋友去启蒙一下。
          • You can go TD bank branches for the program pamphlets about which band plays which program at which time. They also have free workshops where musicians talk about their music experiences and
demonstrate how to play certain musical instruments.
    • free concerts?
      • Only daytime shows between 10 AM and 2 PM or so are free, while evening or late night shows are not, and the prices go from $10 to $30 and over.
      • So shall we go for a free concert this sunday?
        • Ever tried the Toronto Zoo? There might be another polar bear available to be your company for the concert. A friendly reminder. :))))))))))))
        • there are 4 of them ...
      • bewteen 10am to 2pm
        • Thanks for your reminder, but I prefer "between 10 AM AND 2 PM" or "from 10 AM TO 2 pm". Do not try to be others' English teacher, if you are NOT qualified. :)))))))) Otherwise, you would definitely make a fool of yourself.
          • no one on this forum should be teaching other people to speak english "goodness gracias"
      • Last but not least, this post is for those HUMAN BEINGS who love Jazz, NOT for bears or whatever creatures other than human beings. The end.
      • what is your point?
    • We gotta go and support our own ppl, COCO Zhao is peforming on Sat .... http://www.tojazz.com/Pages/eventsearch.asp?menuid=137&festivaldays=1
      • Just got back from the festival, and Mayor David Miller showed up as well. The program description says that Zhao's band will be the first group from China in the history of the Downtown Toronto Jazz Festival, so we got to go there to cheer him up. :)

          • 这就是把中国音乐爵士化,KENNY G. 的“末梨花” 就是一个范例。搞音乐的靠这刁虫小技赚不到钱。
        • You mean to cheer him on, not cheer him up, right? Do not try to be others' English teacher, if you are NOT qualified. :)))))))) Otherwise, you would definitely make a fool of yourself.
          • Thanks a lot for making a fool of youself. :))))) I prefer to use CHEER HIM UP in this specific context, why? I guess you must know. I prefer to use CHEER HIM ON, if he does his show in China-his home country, why? I guess you must know it as well. :)
Just in case you DO NOT know, find someone who DOES KNOW AND IS QUALIFIED TO BE AN ENGLISH TEACHER to let you know.

Sorry that I can not show any respect for you, who, in my point of view, are definitely one of those having NO guts at all to write English often, while having laughable guts to be others' English teachers in public.

            The end.
            • Sorry, but I respectfully disagree. Are you saying that Zhao was UNHAPPY to be the first group from China in the history of the Downtown Toronto Jazz Festival? You had to cheer him up to make him less unhappy? Could you clarify? BTW, ...
you need to brush up on your manners.
