                      • I worked on TN-1 Visa in San Jose before. You can buy a house in US with the same price that Americans are supposed to pay, but you don't want to let those border guys know that you have purchased a house
because the TN-1 visa is a non-immigration visa, you will get turned down right away if they know you have set up your home there. If your kids go to a public school for college, you will have to pay out-of-state tuition , which may easily double what Americans have to pay, unless your kid was born in US(thus becomes a US citizen). As far as I know , it's easy for a TN-1 visa holder to sponsor his spouse to live with him in US on TN-2 (his spouse can not work), but for other relatives, it's almost impossible to get TN-2. Another thing you should pay attention when applying for a TN-1 on the border is that the only eligible computer related profession is "computer system analyst", so make sure your employer specify your duty as a system analyst in the offer letter and bring your degree certificate and its evaluation letter(if your degree was obtained in china, you have to get it evaluated by a US organization.. I don't know much about details).
                        • Thanks! Very Helpful!
                    • for me USA GC is really useless, I happen to work in Detroit area for big3 as engineer under NAFTA, I commute between canada/usa 10 times or more a week.
for general travel purpose, a canadian citizen status is pretty enough, believe me, when i cross border, nether side asks me for a certificate---'ctizenship?', 'canadian'; 'what for?', 'blabla';... then i go.

in fact it is more ideal to live as an ontario resident while commuting between ca/usa:

                      1. early morning commuting (tunnnel, bridge, I-75, I-94) is not bad in terms of traffic, from ca to Ford it takes ~20min only, if you do not treat the border as a country boundary, you feel nothing;

2, earn us$, spend in ca, even considering the tax difference---you know what? here there are 3 casinos, but people still love to go windsor for gambling, cost you less and maybe earn more (if you win)---and along hwy I-75, the ad just says nothing but "go windsor, 1$=1,5x"
                      • As long as you can find job in Detroit
                      • I know somebody live/work like you, but Detroit is kind of terrible city for me. So, if I couldn't earn US$ in US and live in Canada at the same time, I have to consider TN-1 and something else.
                        • when we talk Detroit, we talk about MDA (metro), of course the downtown is kinda sleazy, but its outskirt like Troy, Farmington Hill, Ann Arbor, Bloomfield, Rochester Hill,... are as good as any other good communities.
                      • "Go windsor, 1$=1,5x".Gee i like that. last time i did that was 9 years ago, but it was "1$=1.19x" then. every thing looks so cheap south of the boarder . it's kinda hard to beleive that they still tak Canadian$ on par
