Peony(full sun/part sun), avoid using potting soil, it's too wet/moist. If you think it's weak, you'd better think of returning them, otherwise you may wait two years to see the flower.
Astilbe(part sun/part shade), it's also hardy and needs sometime to recover.
As long as they are alive, doesn't matter thriving or not, they may developing roots underground. Looking forward to the next spring.
About adding compost to heavy clay, I used almost the same amount of compost to existing clay. It's really a lot and spent three years.
Difference:
Before, after I cultivated the soil, it's loose and had good drainage. But after a couple of months (with raining), the ground became hard again.
After, the soil is always loose. When I dug up some plants, the roots are very strong and very well developed. Every spring, there are more new shootings coming out of the roots.
