Questions & Answers

"What the heck is Guerilla Gardening?"

Gardening on other people's land (typically our groups sticks to public space) to make it more beautiful looking. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerrilla_gardening

"Why bother gardening on public space?"

Because we all know spaces in this city that could use a little love and some sprucing up. Let me tell you, when I ride by gardens we've planted in past years, I brim with pride for how good they look. And, you know what, there are a couple of more "selfish" reasons to come out: we have a GREAT team of cool people so if you want to meet new friends and get to know the city, it's a great way to do it. Also, it feels really great to spend time outside and get your hands dirty.

"But I don't know anything about gardening. Can I still come out?"

Oh my godness yes!! We provide the tools and the plan. All you need to do is show up and get a little dirty. It also helps if you can pick up some plants/flowers to bring to the event and contribute to the garden but if you can't come out anyway! We'll put you to work and introduce you to the world of Guerilla Gardening.

When do the plantings take place? Typically we schedule between 3 and 5 plantings during the day on weekends between the beginning of May and the end of June. We also usually schedule one night planting normally on Summer Solstice. We have one meeting to make seed bombs and another seed bombing party.

"And what exactly are seed bombs?"

Seed bombs are clods of compressed soil and seeds that are thrown into areas that are off limits or hard to reach on foot.

"So what is this meeting all about?"

At the beginning of each season we get together to set our planting dates and determine how the group wants to run itself for the year. Sometimes that included assigning district coordinators for 4 areas of the city, making lists of organizations / businesses we can hit up for donations, figuring out how we are going to get volunteers to come out to the plantings, and brainstorming on other places we can get donations.

"Can I bring my partner / friend to the meeting?"

It is still O.K. to bring your partner (business or pleasure) and, you can also send this communication to anyone else you think might be interested in getting involved. The more the merrier!

Level of formality of the meeting? Low!! We just want to have some fun with cool people who want to plant, so if that's you... come on out. We'll have people there in suits (yes, we have some suits on the team) and we'll possibly have people in their medical scrubs. All are welcome!

"I want to volunteer with the Guerilla Gardeners. How do I do that?"

Well the group is very loosely organized so, while we are happy to have you volunteer, two of the key criteria needed are initiative and ability to work independently. Bring us an idea, something you want to do for the group, and we will support you in any way possible. But we won't nag you, follow up with you, or force you to complete anything. We will give, however, you a RAVING reference letter if you deliver something fabulous, you'll get lots of good Karma and you'll contribute to making Toronto a nicer place to live.

"Who are the Toronto Guerilla Gardeners?"

We grew from the loins of the Toronto Public Space Committee and have been in existence since the early 2000s. The group is loosely run by four volunteers; Andy, Katherine, Mara and Terry. Andy is our benefactor and all around fun guy to hang with. He'll talk your ear off and inspire you with his stories of his not-so-long-ago youth. Katherine is our queen communicator. She's full of great ideas, is passionate about gardening and greening Toronto and helps Terry to stay focused during the off season. Mara is our most loveliest and most dedicated planter. A saviour of animals on the clock, she brings her sunny disposition and humor to the plantings during her off hours... she is literally a ray of sunshine. Terry is the main coordinator. She loves to have fun and make the plantings happen as quickly and painlessly as possible... she's even been known to bring out her parents to the plantings. She's the main contact for things like media, donations and operational issues.

"How do I find out more about you guys?"

Dahlia bulbs.
              • 5月初看看,保守一点,5月中下旬
    • 庆祝小会顺利、成功!
