Are your English good enough. Attached is Exam requirment of Richard Ivey Business school, and some suggestions about how to improve your English

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Exam requirements in the Ivey Program

Reading: 30 pages (A4 size) in 2 hours
Writing: 10 pages in 2 hours
Listening and comprehension: fast paced classroom discussion
Speaking: confidently convey your points with the supporting argument
Presentation skills: clarity and confidence in the business environment
Typing: 40-50 words per minute

Due to the lack of exposure to colloquial English, international students in the Ivey program find it challenging to understand and to contribute during class discussion. In addition, concise writing skills are necessary to tackle case exams effectively. However, the following tips can help improve your language capabilities.

Reading:

Read the newspapers and magazines for at least half an hour a day - RIGHT NOW!. You can get a free newspaper at school and read it over the break.

Develop fast reading techniques immediately. Besides the 15-page cases, you’ll have a reading assignment of 20 pages per course per day. You already need to allocate 5 hours for class, 1.5 hours for your team meeting, and 6 hours for the self-preparation of 3 cases. If you can’t read fast, how many hours will you have for sleep, food, and going back and forth to school?

Check unfamiliar words and phrases in the Dictionary which has been prepared by a former student, Andrew Stewart, HBA '98.

Writing:

Western Effective Writing Program: Register in the Student Development Center in the University Community Center, Room 210

Summer hours: 10:00am – 2:00pm, Monday – Thursday

Special writing program for international students at Ivey in September:

Conditional to adequate enrollment, the Western Effective Writing Program will offer a series of 4 workshops starting mid-September to mid-October. The workshops will be held in an afternoon between Monday-Friday, once per week for 2 hours each. Optimal class size is approximately 20 people. (If 40 people enroll, then there can be 2 classes.)

Content: The workshop may involve a written exercise summarizing a business article after which a discussion of the article and the summary can take place. Focus will be given to vocabulary and idiomatic phrases in a business context.

Enrollment: Initial enrollment and program preparation by late July or early August, final signup by early September. If you would like to enroll in this program, please provide some background information for program preparation purposes:

How have you studied English writing?
What kinds of material did you write before - email, technical papers, management reports, business communications, etc?
What kinds of difficulty do you have about writing?
What questions do you have in writing?
There are web sites that contain information about how to write good management reports, about language, writing, and grammar, and about presentations and public speaking, etc, which are helpful to international students like us.

Listening and comprehension:

Listen more to the radio than watch TV

Speaking:

Read aloud a book or newspaper for at least an hour per day
Don’t talk to Chinese people in Chinese all the time (include family members). Try to speak in English even with Chinese.
Go out of your way to talk to English-speaking people as much as possible
Having an English-speaking roommate or host/hostess can help you improve your speaking ability.

Typing:

Typing is not a skill required only for secretarial positions. It’s the ability that will help you in mastering the expression part of the language. You’ll benefit from good typing skills in the exams. An exam written on your computer may help your grade, and also help you keep good records. The professors can read typed exams better than handwriting.

    • It's very useful information. I can read 30 pages in 1 hour now. But writing... hard pain. Need more effort.
    • hi, david,
I am also eager to improve my English in this summer because I will go to York to pursue MBA study this Fall. York has its own ESL program and it is said that the high level of ESL is designed for those prospective students. I'm hesitating whether i should go there. Is there any better approach?
      • Cause I havn't taken any course from York U, so I have no comment about it.
        • Sorry I make you misunderstand me. what I mean is according to your experiences, which approach is the best, to go to a ESL school, to go to work, or learn it by oneself?
    • should be "Is your english good enough".. :-)
    • A good post, I have printed it out..Thanks.
