Welcome to the TD Helps Community. Great question and one I can certainly help with!
Your TD Direct Investing Accounts (Cash/Margin, RSP & TFSA) have both a Canadian Dollar and US Dollar component; currently RESP & RIF accounts only have a Canadian component. Having both a CAD and USD component means you can stay currency neutral by buying securities on the CAD or USD markets, whichever you prefer. Previously, you would have had to pay an exchange rate for buying securities on the NYSE if you were using your CAD component.
If your TD Direct Investing Accounts do not have both a CAD and USD component, you can contact a TD Direct Investing Specialist at 1-800-465-5463 to get one added at no charge. All new TD Direct Investing Accounts will come with both components.
Any contributions made in USD will be converted to the market rate equivalent in CAD and reported accordingly to CRA. Live market rates are used and it's difficult to determine what your rate would be at any given time. However, you can contact a TD Direct Investing Specialist to make your contribution if you would like to know what the exchange rate is at the time of the contribution in order to avoid any overcontributions. It's also important to note that contributions in USD can only be made a few different ways (transfer from TD Direct Investing Non-Registered Account in kind to your TD Direct Investing RSP USD Component) - you cannot simply make a transfer from your TD Bordeless Account to your TD Direct Investing RSP (in USD).
I hope this helps answer your questions, James. Please feel free to write us back if you have any other questions.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
