本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I met one couple at a IT training school with their lovely 10 month old babygirl. They both graduated from Tianjin University with Ph.D in chemistry area, and did 3-year post-doc in an Ottawa university. They moved to Toronto recently, and only wife got a small job in a tiny company.

They told me almost everyone they met would ask such question:



Do you feel the big gap between academic job and industry one? How do you fill it and adapt yourself to a new life?

The wife told me she just failed an interview from a bigger company.

What would I answer if they ever ask me? I have been a teacher in CS department in the US university before, then jumped out into industry and worked for 10 years. Is there any gap I have ever felt? Well, yes, but, in whatever circumstance, I would make a strong eye contact with the person who asked this question, and say: No gap at all.

Is there any real gap? Somewhat, but you can jump across any gap if you feel you must go ahead to pursue your career goal, so why still call it a gap if it will sure behind your feet?

If they hear you feel a big gap between what you did and what they assign you to do, why do they make decision to hire you and help you do the big jump? They are not running a charity organization.
