In a peer to peer network with win2000, you need set up all computers using same workgroup, same username and same password.

I think your way should be able to work, butI think your way should be able to work, because if I share a folder in one pc 1, and in pc 2 I can access this folder by providing username/password, but don't you think it's a little bit stupid that two pcs using same username/password? Probably it's a regular way to figure out it.
And do you know why pc1 doesn't ask for the username/password when I try to access it from pc2, instead giving error message "not accessiable"?

Here is an article from Microsoft's KB to answer your question.: Configuring Windows 2000 Professional to Work in a Peer-to-Peer Workgroup . http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;258717

another way try to use command line to map the shared directory:
net use * \\desktop_pc\shared_directory /user:my_domain\my_name
if you share the folder to everybody, you do not need '/user...'
