turn the knob to "pilot" ( or something like this, then other way as compared to "on"), not "on" and try it ignite it.

夏天壁炉玻璃热的发烫正常吗？那时家里整天开着空调，这个壁炉像似散发着巨大的热量，我只好把它关掉了。

if it is produce "巨大的热量", it is better to shut the pilot off, but in my case just slightly warm. the heat it produced will not be greater then from a window where face the full sun

I shut it off every year. It does not need not rock science to turn it on. See mpoon(无牌电工....)'s post above. Save energy and save the environment.
